John Richard Attlee
John Richard Attlee, 3rd Earl Attlee (born 3rd October 1956) succeeded to the title of 3rd Viscount Prestwood, of Walthamstow in 1991. He is a British peer and a hereditary member of the House of Lords. He is a Trustee of the Attlee Foundation, as well as President of the Heavy Transport Association and Patron of the Road Rescue Recovery Association. He undertook a tour with the NGO British Direct Aid in Bosnia in 1993, then ran British Direct Aid's operation in Rwanda for most of 1995. Attlee was member of the Territorial Army, gaining the rank of Captain in the service of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and he served in Bosnia and in Iraq.
Political career[edit]
He is the grandson of Clement Attlee, the British Prime Minister, who was 1st Earl Attlee. After his father’s death, Attlee inherited the title of Earl in 1991. One year later he entered the House of Lords, initially as a crossbencher. In 1997 he joined the Conservative Party. He has been elected Opposition Spokesperson on various subjects. He was Front-Bench Opposition Spokesman for Northern Ireland in 1998. In 2010 he was appointed Lord in Waiting and Lords Spokesperson at the Department of Transport. He left his role in April 2014, when he left the Government.
