Lord Carlile of Berriew has been a Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords since the 27th July 1999. His full title is: The Lord Carlile of Berriew QC CBE. He has worked as a Barrister and Deputy High Court Judge.

Political Career

Before his appointment to the House of Lords, Lord Carlile was a Member of Parliament for the Montgomery Constituency from 1983-97. He has also held a number of roles within Parliament, for both the House of Lords and the House of Commons. In 1983-86 he was a member of both the Select and Joint Committee for the Statutory Instruments in the House of Commons. In 1986 he was Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration. Subsequently he was a member on the Welsh Affairs Committee in the house of Commons between 1992-7.

Following his appointment to the House of Lords, Lord Carlile was appointed a member of the Draft Mental Health Bill Committee, a committee of which he was then appointed Chairman from 2004-05. During this time he was also on the Committee on the Assisted Dying for the terminally ill Bill. From 2010-12 he was on the Delegated Powers and Regulatory Reform Committee.

Education

Alexander Carlile was educated at Epsom college and then King’s College London where he graduated in Law in 1969. He was called to the Bar by Gray's Inn in 1970 and became a QC at the unusually young age of 36.

Notable Work

Alexander Carlile has had a successful career as a Barrister. He was appointed to the Queen’s Council in 1994 and has worked as a Deputy High Court Judge since 2001. Between 2005-13 he worked as Part-time Chair for the Competition Appeal Tribunal. Carlile was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2012 New Year Honours for services to national security.
