Hans Franken was born on the 17th of September 1936 in Haarlem. He has been a member of the Dutch Senate for the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) since 2004. Since 2011, he has been the second Vice Chairman of the Senate. He is also the Vice Chairman of the CDA-fraction in the Senate. He also is a professor in Information Law at the University of Leiden.

Political career[edit]

Between 1962 and 1966 he was acting public prosecutor in Rotterdam. In 1965 and 1966 he was acting count clerk at the Court of Rotterdam. He was a lawyer and attorney of law between 1967 and 1969. Subsequently, until 1974, he was a judge at the Court of Rotterdam. Between 1972 and 1978 he was a member of the States-Provincial of South-Holland. He was a professor in ‘introduction to jurisprudence’ at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (1974-1977) and the University of Leiden (1977-1983). He was a member of the Council of State between 1983 and 1987. From 1987 to 2001, he was a professor of ‘Encyclopedia of legal science and infomatics and law’ at the University of Leiden. In addition to his career, he was a member of different commissions of the CDA.

Education[edit]

Franken studied law at the University of Leiden until 1959. In 1973 he obtained his doctorate in law at the University of Amsterdam.

Interesting facts[edit]

Franken is a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. This is is a Dutch order of chivalry founded by King William I of the Netherlands on 29 September 1815. He was also bestowed the ‘Wolfert van Borsselenpenning’ (an award for citizens in Rotterdam), the ‘Modderman Prijs’ (for outstanding scientific publications) and the Winston Award (for people that are committed to the protection of privacy).
