Grzegorz Schetyna
Grzegorz Schetyna born on the 18th February 1963 in Opole, Poland is a Polish politician and entrepreneur, historian and a Member of Parliament (III, IV, V, VI and VII legislature). From 2007 to 2009 he was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior and Administration, from 2009 to 2010 he was the chairman of the Civic Platform parliamentary club and from 2010 to 2011 he was the Speaker of the Parliament’s sixth term. In 2010, he was the temporary President of the Republic. He became the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz in 2014.
Political Career[edit]
In 1997-2007, he was a Member of the III, IV and V mandate - initially with the district of Wroclaw and, from 2005, of Legnica. In the parliamentary elections in 2007, he was elected as a Member of the sixth term. He was a member of the KLD, in which, from 1992 to 1994, he served as Secretary General of the Union of Freedom. Since 2001 he has worked in the Civic Platform. He served, between 2001-2003 and 2004-2010, as Secretary General of the group, then he was deputy leader from 2010 to 2013. He also directed the Lower Silesian reforms until October 2013. From 16 November 2007 he was the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration and Deputy Prime Minister in the first government of Donald Tusk. In July 5, 2010 was declared as the Civic Platform candidate for the position of Speaker of the Parliament in place of Bronisław Komorowski, who resigned from this function after the election for President of the Republic of Poland. In July 8, 2010 he was elected as Speaker of the Parliament. Due to being in the running for the Parliament Speaker office he was also temporarily performing the duties of the President of Poland. In 2010 during a ceremony at the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising he granted the Orders Revival of Polish participants of the Warsaw Uprising. In total he awarded 195 medals and awards, including 39 Polish Revival Our award. He finished this function on August 6, 2010 upon the assumption of office by the President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski. In the parliamentary elections in 2011, for the fifth time in a row he was elected deputy to the district of Legnica. On November the 17th , 2011 he was appointed Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs. In 2014 he was appointed foreign minister in Ewa Kopacz’s government.
Education[edit]
Initially, he studied law but then graduated in History at the Faculty of Philosophy and History at the University of Wroclaw in 1990. He was chairman of the Independent Students' Association for several years at university.
