Alain Claeys
Alain Claeys (born August 25, 1948) is a Socialist Party member of the National Assembly of France for the first constituency of Vienne, in southeastern France. Claeys is also currently the Mayor of Poitiers.
Political Career[edit]
Claeys began his political career in 1982, serving as a Municipal Councillor for Vienne. In 1986, he also joined the Regional Council of Poitou-Charentes.
In 1997, Claeys was elected to the French National Assembly for the first constituency of Vienne and has remained in that position since. As well as serving in the National Assembly, Claeys was elected Mayor of Poitiers in 2008.
In May 2013, Claeys was appointed Rapporteur (Parliamentary Reporter of proceedings) of the Parliamentary Investigation Commission formed during the Jérôme Cahuzac tax fraud scandal. Cahuzac was forced to resign due to the scandal and was officially exluded from the French Socialist Party after admitting to holding secret foreign bank accounts.
