James Newcome, The Rt Rev. the Lord Bishop of Carlisle joined the House of Lords on the 3rd of October 2013.

Political Career[edit]

The Rt Rev. the Lord Bishop of Carlisle joined the House of Lords on the 3rd of October 2013. His focus in Parliament revolves around Communities and Families, Defence and Health Services and Medicine.

Education[edit]

Growing up as the son of an Officer in the Army James Newcome spent time in Malta and Germany during his childhood. He attended Marlborough College from 1966 to 1971. In 1971 he attended Trinity College, Oxford and read Modern History. He received a Master of Arts in 1978. He commissioned as a second lieutenant on the General List of the Territorial Army on 23rd May 1974. In 1975, he studied at the University of Cambridge at Selwyn College whilst preparing for ordination at Ridley Hall, Cambridge He graduated with a BA in 1977 and then an MA in 1981.

Notable Work[edit]

James Newcome was ordained deacon in 1978. His career began with a curacy at All Saints, Leavesden in the Diocese of St Albans. He became a priest and remained there until 1982.

He became a tutor and lecturer in Pastoral Theology, Ethics and Integrating Theology at the Cambridge Federation of Theological Colleges from 1983 to 1988. He was Rural Dean of the North Stowe Deanery from 1988 to 1994. In 1994 he was appointed Canon Residentiary at Chester Cathedral. He was appointed Bishop of Penrith in March 2002 and then Bishop of Carlisle in May 2009.
