George Foulkes
George Foulkes, Baron Foulkes of Cumnock, PC (born 21 January 1942, Oswestry, Shropshire) is a British Labour Party life peer. He has been a member of the House of Commons, the Scottish Parliament and as a life peer is now a member of the House of Lords.
Political Career[edit]
George Foulkes started out his career in the House of Commons. He was elected as MP for South Ayrshire in 1979-83. In 1983 he became MP for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley. He served on a number of Committees including the Foreign Affairs Select Committee and the Council of Europe.From 1983 to 1997, he was a Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Overseas Development. When Labour won the election in 1997 he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department for international Devel-opment. He was then appointed Minister of State for Scotland. He held this position from 2001 until a re-shuffle in 2002. George Foulkes was appointed a Life Peer at the House of Lords in 2005. He has held a number of positions throughout his time as a Lord including on the Intelligence and Security from 2007-10, National Security Strategy in 2010 and EU Sub-Committee G - Social Policies and Consumer Protection Lords.
Education[edit]
George Foulkes attended the independent, fee-paying Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School in Hertfordshire. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Edinburgh. During his time at University he became Senior President of the Students’ Representative Council and later became the full-time President of the Scottish Union of Students.
