Meghnad Jagdishchandra Desai
Meghnad Jagdishchandra Desai, Lord Desai, was born on the 10th July 1940 in Vadodara, Gujarat, India. He is an economist and Labour Party politician.
Political Career[edit]
Desai was chairman of the British Labour Party from 1986-1992. He was also made Honorary Lifetime and President of Islington South and Finsbury Constituency Labour Party in London. He was finally made a life peer in April 1991, receiving the title Baron Desai, of St Clement Danes in the City of Westminster. During his time in parliament, Desai served on a number of committees. The last committee he served on was the Intergovernmental Organisations Committee from 2007-2008.
Education[edit]
He studied his masters at the University of Mumbai. After this he won a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania were he went on to complete his PHD in 1963.
Notable Work[edit]
Desai is currently chairman of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum advisory board. The institution is an independent financial think tank which serves as an unbiased, non-lobbying platform for exchanges among official institutions and private sector counterparties worldwide. His first book was released in 1973 with the title ‘Marxian Economic Theory’. He has also published a biography of Indian film star Dilip Kumar in 2004.
