Education

George Vella was born in 1942 at Zejtun, Malta. He was educated as De La Salle College. He graduated in medicine from the University of Malta in 1964.

History

He entered in the Parliament in 1978. He was appointed leader of Malta Delegation to the Conference of Local and Regional Authorities (Council of Europe)in 1978. He was elected substitute Member of Parliament to Parliamentary Assembly (Council of Europe) in 1982. He became a member of the Parliamentary Delegation for relations with the European Parliament in 1986. He returned to Parliament in 1992 and he was elected Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs and main spokesman of the Opposition on Foreign Affairs. He was the 2nd Vice Chairman of the Malta-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee. From 1996 to 1998 he hold the seat of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Environment. He is a member of the “EuroMed Parliamentary Assembly” and of the “Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.” He is the Main Spokesperson on Foreign and EU Affairs as a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs.
