Roles
Masaharu Nakagawa is a Japanese politician serving in Japan’s House of Representatives as a member of the Democratic Party of Japan. He returned to Japan after studying in the United States of America, and was elected for his first mandate in 1996. Before entering Diet, the Japanese bicameral legislature, he served in the Mie Prefectural Assembly for 12 years. He has served as a member on both the Committee on Security, and the Special Committee on Disasters. Nakagawa was a Senior Vice Education Minister under Yukio Hatoyama's Cabinet and Naoto Kan's first Cabinet. During those stints, he aimed to make Japanese language education policy for foreigners more effective. In September 2011, he was appointed to the responsibility of Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and then to the responsibility of Minister of State for Disaster Management. He is now the Acting Secretary General of the Democratic Party of Japan.
Education
Born in Japan, he graduated from the School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University in Washington DC, USA.
History
After studying at Georgetown University in the United States, Nakagawa went on to work for the Japan Foundation, a government-affiliated body that promotes Japanese culture overseas.
