Alan Campbell has been the Labour MP for Tynemouth since 1997. He was born in Consett in 1957.

Political Career

From 1997 until 2001 Alan Campbell was a member of the Public Accounts Select Committee, the Labour Party Departmental Committees for Defence; Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and National Heritage/Culture, Media and Sport. He has also held the posts of Secretary and Treasurer of the Northern Group of Labour MPs. Between 2001 and 2003 he held the post of Parliamentary Private Secretary to Lord Macdonald of Tradeston, Minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Alan Campbell was also a member of the Joint Committee on the Draft Charities Bill during the 2004-2005 Parliamentary Session. Alan Campbell was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Adam Ingram MP, Armed Forces Minister. Following his re-election in May 2005, he was invited to join the Government as Assistant Whip. In 2006 Alan Campbell became a Lord Commissioner of Her Majesty’s Treasury (Government Whip). On 6th October 2008 he was made Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Home Office. Alan Campbell has also been a member of the Labour MP's Seaside and Coastal Towns Group, the All Party Small Shops Group and the All Party Fisheries Group. Alan Campbell was re-elected as MP for Tynemouth Constituency on 6th May 2010 and is now Opposition Deputy Chief Whip.

Education

He went to Blackfyne Secondary School before attending the University of Lancaster where he gained a degree in politics. He qualified as a teacher at the University of Leeds before gaining a postgraduate degree in History at Newcastle Polytechnic.
