Cultural Hegemony
Cultural Hegemony
A sociological theory formulated by prominent Marxist philosopher, Antonio Gramsci (founder of the Italian Communist Party). The theory states that a culturally diverse society can be ruled or dominated through “implied means” as opposed to the use of force. In other words, the ideas of the dominant class automatically become the ruling ideas, and the way in which the society is run or constructed is determined by the ruling culture.
