Donald Anderson
Lord Donald Anderson, Baron Anderson of Swansea, PC, DL (born 17 June 1939, Swansea), is a British Labour Party politician. He was a Member of Parliament for Monmouth from 1966 to 1970 and Swansea East from 1974 to 2005.
Political Career
From 1971 to 1974 he was a Labour councillor in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. In 1983 he was appointed Shadow Spokesperson on Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs. Later in 1993 he was nominated Shadow Spokesperson on Defence, Disarmament and Arms Control. Being one of the longest-serving Members of Parliament in the UK in recent years, he retired from Parliament at the 2005 general election. In 2005 it was announced that he would be created a life peer, and the same year he was created Baron Anderson of Swansea in the County of West Glamorgan. He was appointed a DL (Deputy Lieutenant) of West Glamorgan in February 2006. From 2006 to 2010 he was member of the EU Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Policy. Since 2012 he has been a member of the EU Subcommittee on Justice, Institutions and Consumer Protection.
Education
Anderson was educated at Swansea Bishop Gore School and University of Swansea, where he was also University Lecturer from 1965 to 1966.
