Eric Van Rompuy

Eric Van Rompuy was born on November 23rd 1949 in Ukkel (Belgium). He is a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for the Flemish Christian Democratic Party (CD&V).

Political Career

Eric Van Rompuy started his political career in 1977 as national party leader of the CVP (predecessor of CD&V) youth party. Since 1981 he has held a seat as councillor in Zaventem. The same year, he got elected as a member of the European Parliament, and held this position until 1984. From 1982 to 1988 he was first alderman of Zaventem. Since 2007, he has been alderman again in Zaventem. Between 1985 and 1995, he was a member of the Flemish Council (predecessor of the Flemish Parliament). In 1995, after the regional elections, he became Minister of Economy, Small Businesses, and Media in the Government of Van den Brande 4. He held this position until 1999. From 1999 to 2014, he turned back to the legislative power, as a member of the Flemish Parliament. Since the national elections on May 25th 2014, Van Rompuy has been a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for the Flemish Christian Democrats (CD&V).

Education

He graduated in economics and philosophy and later acquired a doctoral degree in economics from the KU Leuven.
