FDR joins NATO
October 23, 1954
The London Conference (also called the Nine-Power Conference) of September 1954 agrees that the occupying powers in West Germany would make every effort to end the occupation, and that the Federal Republic of Germany would accede to NATO. They meet again in Paris in October, and the FDR signs the official agreements decided upon in London. The Brussels Treaty is also amended, formally adding West Germany and Italy to the Western European Union.
