Douglas Alexander
Rt Hon Douglas Alexander MP is a member of parliament for the constituency of Oldham East and Saddleworth, he is a member of the Labour Party and has been in office since 2005.
Biography[edit]
Douglas Alexander grew up in Renfrewshire. His father was a local Parish Minister for thirty years and is a former Moderator of Paisley Presbytery. Douglas was educated locally at Bishopton Primary School, and Park Mains High School before studying History, Politics and Law at Edinburgh University. Douglas also won a scholarship to study at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, USA. Douglas first joined the Labour Party and became involved in politics in Renfrewshire more than 30 years ago, after witnessing his schoolfriends' parents losing their jobs when the Linwood Car Plant closed. Decades on tackling the evils of unemployment and poverty remains central to his politics. Now as a Renfrewshire MP Douglas works to support a range of individuals, groups, campaigns and local public services for the benefit of our community.
