Andrzej Szlachta

Andrzej Szlachta born 19 January 1947 in Rzeszów. He is a Polish politician.

Political career[edit]

In 1980, Andrzej Szlachta joined in the creation of the social movement "Solidarity". He was chairman of the "Solidarity" at the Rzeszów University of Technology. In 1981, as an activist of "Solidarity" he was haunted by the Security Service. The Institute of National Remembrance gave him the status of victim. In the spring of 1989 he began to rebuild the structure of the "Solidarity" in Rzeszow universities. After the legalization of "Solidarity", he joined in the work of the Works Committee "Solidarity" at the Rzeszów University of Technology. For many years he was its chairman. He was also a member of the Regional Board of Rzeszów "Solidarity", a delegate to the National Assembly, he was a member of the Presidium of the Congress and a member of the National Committee of "Solidarity". In 1998, he was chief of staff of the Akcja Wyborcza Solidarność(Solidarity Electoral Action) in the local elections contributing to the great success of AWS in the Subcarpathian region.

From 1999 to 2002 Andrzej Szlachta was President of Rzeszów and until 2005, its councillor. In 2005 he was elected from the "Prawo i Sprawiedliwość" list. In 2007 he was elected again. In 2009 he tried to be elected to the European Parliament, but he did not gain enough votes. In 2011 he was elected to Polish Parliament. In 2014 his party nominated him as an official candidate for President of Rzeszów
