These institutions are usually independent of the government and seek to represent the interests of common citizens. Although civil society generally refers to public participation in society, it also represents the national ethos, [[Norms|norms]] and [[values]] of a particular community. In a civil society, principles such as the rule of law, freedom of speech, and independent judiciary, are seen as vital for democracy.
