Efstathios (Stathis) Panagoulis

Efstathios Panagoulis was born in Athens in 1946. He is a Greek politician.

Political Career[edit]

In 1977 he was first elected MP with PASOK in Athens (39.351 crosses preference) and re-elected in 1981 (47,500 crosses).In Both those elections was ranked second among the fellow candidates, behind Apostolos Kaklamanis. He participated in the first government of Andreas Papandreou in 1981, as Minister of Internal Affairs, a position he held until August 31, 1982, while on September 8, 1982 was removed from the party and remained independent MP.

On 14 March 1984 he founded his own party, the ESPE (Unified Socialist Greece Array) which took part in the 1984 elections as the head of the ballot. The party received only 8,282 votes (0.14%), which led the next year to collaborate with the Communist Party, so on the elections of 1985 he was elected MP, having placed third in the ballot of the party (the elections that were held with the process of the list).

The fermentations in the area of the Left in the coming years, led to the formation of the Coalition of the Left and Progress(SYRIZA), which was candidate to the two elections of 1989 in Athens, but failed to be elected (crosses 16,668 in June and 13,368 in November, classified and twice in the seventh position of the ballot as first and second runner up respectively).After the fall of the Mitsotakis government and the creation of the Political Spring by Antonis Samaras, was parliamentary candidate in the elections of 1993 and again failed to be elected, taking 10,073 crosses, ranked in fourth position ballot (The Political Spring had elect two deputies in Athens).

In the following years he collaborated with DIKKI political party, failing again presence in Parliament and in the elections of May 2012 he was nominated by SYRIZA in Athens when he failed again to be elected (14,467 preference crosses ranked 10th place and runner-up), while the June elections that followed the process list, again positioned in 10th place the ballot in the party B Athens, was elected as SYRIZA won 13 seats in this region instead of 9 in previous election.

Education Career[edit]

He studied Political Science at University of Rome.He speaks English and Italian.

Notable Work[edit]

During the dictatorship he arrested in June 1967 and incarcerated in prisons Averof. On his release he escaped to Italy where he joined the Greek Resistance organization, founded by his brother Alekos Panagoulis. For his anti-junta's action was arrested and imprisoned for a second time in 1972, when he had entered Greece illegally.
