Peter Van Rompuy was born in Ukkel on the 5th of March 1980. He is a Belgian politician and a member of the Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams (CD&V) party. In 2012 he became a member of the Flemish Parliament. Since 2010 he has been active as senator. He is the son of Herman Van Rompuy, who was President of the European Council until November 2014.

Political career[edit]

After Peter graduated from Law School he worked as a lawyer, a communications consultant, a parliamentary assistant and a cabinet member. He is also a columnist for the weekly magazine Knack and international secretary for the CD & V. He started his political career as a parliamentary assistant. He first took part in county council elec-tions in 2006 where he got 4,000 preference votes. In 2007 he participated in the Federal elections and in June 2009 he was a candidate (2nd successor) for the Flemish elections in the constituency of Flemish Brabant, where he got 10,081 preference votes. He did not receive enough votes in the 2010 parliamentary elections to get elected senator. Three weeks later, however, he got appointed by the general meeting of CD & V as a co-opted senator.

In 2012 he got elected as a councillor in Leuven, a role in which he stayed until 2014, when he moved to Beersel. When Tom Dehaene became commissioner in 2012, Van Rompuy took his place in the Flemish Parliament and so left the Senate as a co-opted senator. In the Flemish elec-tions of 2014 Peter Van Rompuy was elected the leader of the CD & V party for the province of Flemish Brabant. He got reelected in the Flemish Parliament and appointed as first vice president. He also returned to the Senate as a state senator.
