Peter Vanvelthoven was born on October 22nd 1962 in Lommel (Belgium). He is a member of the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for the Flemish Socialist Party (SP.A). He is also mayor of Lommel.

Political Career[edit]

Peter Vanvelthoven’s political career started in 1994 as a councillor in the province of Limburg until 1995. In 1995, he became provincial deputy in Limburg. From 1995 to 1999, he sat in the Flemish Parliament. After the national elections in 1999, he moved from the Flemish Parliament to the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for SP.A. In the period 2003-2007, he was Belgian State Secretary and Minister of computerization of the state. From 2005 to 2007, Vanvelthoven was Belgian Minister of Work. He is also active on the local level in Lommel. Since 2007, he has been councillor and mayor in Lommel. Then, in 2009-2010, he moved back to the Flemish Parliament, where he led the SP.A group. Since 2010, he has held a seat in the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for the Flemish socialists (SP.A).

Education[edit]

He graduated in law from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in 1985. A year later he acquired a special certificate in taxation and accounting from the University of Gent.
