Philippe Bas
Philippe Bas (born July 20, 1958) is a French Senator representing the department of Mache and a member of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP). Prior to entering the Senate, Bas served as the Secretary General of the Élysée under the Presidency of Jacques Chirac.
Political Career[edit]
Bas entered politics in 1988 when he became the Adviser to the French Minister of Labour, Jean-Pierre Soisson. In 1993, he was appointed the French Cabinet and in 2002, Bas was appointed Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic (Secretary General of the Élysée) and served in that position for two years. In 2005, he was appointed Minister of Social Security, the Elderly, the Disabled and the Family and in 2007, he was appointed Minister of Health and Solidarity.
In 2008, Bas also became the President of the Municipal Council of Saint-Pois.
After the rise of the Left, Bas was elected to the French Senate for the department of Manche in 2011. In the Senate, Bas serves as the President of the Committee on Constitutional Acts, Universal Sufferage, Legislation and Regulations. He also serves as the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Law Enforcement.

Bas attended the Institute of Political Studies in Paris and the National School of Administration.
