Yeo, Tim
Mr Yeo Tim MP is a member of parliament for the constituency of South Suffolk, he is a member of the Conservative Party and has been in office since 1983.
Biography[edit]
Before entering Parliament, Tim held a number of posts in business and was on the board of three quoted companies. He was Chief Executive of Scope from 1980 to 1984, one of the largest service providing charities in England, operating schools, residential homes, training centres and conducting medical research.
In 1982 Tim led the successful campaign to save the Tadworth Court Children's Hospital, formerly the country branch of Great Ormond Street Hospital. From 1983 to 1990, he was Chairman of the Children's Trust, the charity which took over the management of Tadworth Court and greatly expanded and improved its services.
Tim founded the Charities Tax Reform Group in 1981 and was its Chairman until 1990. The Group is now the main umbrella organisation representing charities on taxation issues.
Tim was educated at Charterhouse and won an Open Exhibition to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he obtained an MA in History.
Tim also serves on the Board of a number of companies.
In March 2012, Tim was appointed the first President of the Renewable Energy Association.
Political Career[edit]
Tim has been MP for South Suffolk since 1983. He was a member of the Thatcher and Major governments, serving in the Home Office, Foreign Office, Department of Health and Department of the Environment.
In his last Ministerial post, as Minister of State for the Countryside and Environment, he reformed planning law, helped to develop climate change policy and established the now thriving Energy Saving Trust. Tim was a member of the Shadow Cabinet from 1998 until 2005, when he resigned in order to speak freely about issues such as the environment. During his time in the Shadow Cabinet he served as Shadow Minister of Agriculture, Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Shadow Secretary of State for Public Services, Health and Education, and Shadow Secretary of State for Environment and Transport.
In 2001 as Shadow Minister of Agriculture, Tim played the leading role in exposing the Government’s mishandling of the Foot and Mouth Disease epidemic. In the last Parliament, Tim was Chair of the cross-party Environmental Audit Committee. He has now been elected Chair of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee.
