From 1996 to 2007, he served as temporary Chair of Committees, and presided the Senate from 2007 to 2008. Since 2008 he acts as the deputy President of the Senate and Chair of Committees.

Alan Ferguson worked as self-employed insurance consultant from 1985 to 1992. He joined the Liberal Party of Australia and was elected Senator for South Australia in 1993, serving until 2011. From 1996 to 2007, he served as temporary Chair of Committees, and presided the Senate from 2007 to 2008. Since 2008, he is acting as the deputy President of the Senate and Chair of Committees.
