Jesús Enrique Iglesias Fernández

Jesús Enrique Iglesias Fernández was born on 1st January 1959 in Gijón, Spain. He is a Spanish politician, member of United Left (IU) and Senator since 2012.

Political Career[edit]

In 1975 he joined the Communist Youth Union of Spain, and later in 1982, joined the Communist Party of Spain. He has been coordinator of IU in Asturias since 2000 and spokesman of the group IU-BA-LV in the Asturian Parliament. He is also responsible for the Group in the Committees on Economic and European Affairs, Industry and Employment.

He participated in the creation of the IU as head of the list in the municipal elections of 1991 for Gijón, and since then he has been spokesman of the IU Group in the city until 2000 and holds a position on the Board of Directors of Caja Asturias.

Since 1998 Jesús Enrique Iglesias Fernández has developed his work as Head of Municipal Policy of the United Left in Asturias. In 2000 he was appointed General Coordinator of the United Left of Asturias, signing a pact with PSOE and Bloque por Asturies letting IU become part of the Government of the Principality of Asturias.

In 2012, he resigned to run for reelection as coordinator and was appointed as a Senator by the General Council of the Principality of Asturias.

Education[edit]

He obtained a Law degree from the University of Oviedo.
