Paul Yaw Boateng, Baron Boateng
Paul Yaw Boateng, Baron Boateng was born on 14 June 1951. He is a British Labour Party politician, who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Brent South from 1987 to 2005, becoming the UK's first mixed race Cabinet Minister in May 2002, when he was appointed as Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Political career[edit]
Boateng was elected to the Greater London Council for Walthamstow in 1981. From 1989 until 1992 he was Shadow Spokesperson (Business, Innovation and Skills), then from 1992 until 1997 he was the Shadow Minister (Business, Innovation and Skills). In 1997 and 1998 he was Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department of Health). Between 1998 and 2001 he was also Minister of State (Home Office). In 2001 and 2002 he was Minister of State (Home Office). From 2002 until 2005 he was Chief Secretary to the Treasury.
Education[edit]
He attended the Accra Academy High School, in Ghana. Then, he moved to the UK and he attended Apsley Grammar School in Hemel Hempstead. He graduated in law at the University of Bristol. Then, he began his career in civil rights, originally as a solicitor, though he later retrained as a barrister. He worked primarily on social and community cases. He was Director of Akyem Law and Advisory Services Limited .
