From 1995 until 1999 he was the Chairman of the Stichting Ontwikkelbank Centrum (Foundation for the Promotion of Central Rotterdam). Since 1999 Meijer has been a ,ember of Socialist Party executive. From 1998 until 2002 he was a member of the Delfshaven District Council and from 1999 until 2009 a member of the European Parliament.
