Erik Meijer
Erik Meijer (born on December 5th, 1944 in Amsterdam) is a member of the Dutch Senate for the Socialist Party (SP).
Political Career[edit]
Erik Meijer has been politically active since the beginning of the 1960s. From 1961 until 1969 Erik Meijer was an executive of the Socialist Youth and Student Organisations. Between 1968 and 1991 he held office at national level in the PSP (Pacifist Socialist Party). He was the vice-chairman of the elected representatives' section. From 1975 until 1978 Meijer was a member of the Amsterdam City Council. He was the local government official of the Rotterdam City Council from 1980 until 1992. From 1982 until 1995 Erik Meijer was a member of the South Holland Provincial Council and from 1990 until 1993 a member of executive of the Citizenship Foundation. From 1992 until 1995 Meijer was a member of executive and Vice-Chairman of the Groenlinks. He was Chairman of the Spangen (Rotterdam) Residents' Association from 1995 until 1998. From 1995 until 1999 he was the Chairman of the Stichting Ontwikkelbank Centrum (Foundation for the Promotion of Central Rotterdam). Since 1999 Meijer has been the Socialist Party executive. From 1998 until 2002 he was a member of the Delfshaven District Council and from 1999 until 2009 a member of the European Parliament. Since 2014 Erik Meijer has been a member of the Dutch Senate for the SP.
Education[edit]
Erik Meijer completed a higher degree in Social Geography at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) from 1962 until 1972.
