Baroness Campbell of Surbiton
Baroness Campbell of Surbiton is a cross bench member of the House of Lords and was appointed on the 30th March 2007.
Political Career[edit]
Baroness Campbell of Surbiton started her political career in 1991 when she became chair for the British Council of Disabled People, she held this post until 1995 when she became Governor for the National Institute for Social Work. She left this post in 2001. From 2000 until 2006 Baroness Surbiton worked as commissioner for the Disability Rights Commission. She then became Commissioner for Equality at the Human Rights Commission. From 2006-2009 she became Chair of the Disability Committee for the Equality and Human Rights Commission. In 2007 she was appointed as a member of the House of Lords. She was a member of the Human Rights Committee in Parliament from 2010-2012.
Education[edit]
Campbell attended a school for disabled children. In 1975 she attended Hereward College, another specialised disabled school, where she was did well academically. She attended Hatfield Polytechnic and went on to gain an MA from Sussex University.
Notable Work[edit]
She has worked throughout her career focusing on Equal Oppurtunities for people with disabilities. From 1984 she was Equal Oppurtunities Liaison Officer for the Greater London Council. She then took on the role of Disability Training Development Officer until 1987. In 1988 she became Director of Training for the London Boroughs Disability Resource Team until 1994. Following this she was appointed Co-director of the National Centre for Independent Living from 1996 until 2000. Her current role is as a Disability, equality and human rights consultant.
She has also held a number of public roles such as: Executive Chair for the Social Care Institute for Excellence, Founder and Co-Chair of the Not Dead Yet Charity, a member of the Editorial Boad for the British Journal of Social Work, the Chair of the Independent Living Security Group, Office of Disability Issue at the Department for Work and Pensions and the President of the National Disability Archive.
