Carmen Alborch Bataller
Carmen Alborch Bataller was born on 31st October 1947. She is a Spanish socialist politician, actress, writer and former Minister of Culture between 1993 and 1996. She was also the recipient of the Dame Grand Cross of the Royal and Distinguished Order of Carlos III.
Political Career[edit]
Carmen Alborch Bataller was General Director of Culture of the Generalitat Valenciana and Director of the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM). In 1993 she was named Minister for Culture and, in the VI, VII and VIII Legislatures she was deputy of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) for the constituency of Valencia. In 1996, Alborch was elected to the Congress of Deputies, representing Valencia. She chaired the Committee of Control of RTVE (the state radio and TV corporation) from 1996 until January 2000, and the Commission on Women's Rights and Equal Opportunities from May 2004 to January 2008 in the Congress. She has authored books including Solas (Women Alone) and Malas (Bad Women). In 2007 she ran for the Mayor of Valencia but lost. However, in 2008, she was elected Senator of Valencia being the fourth most voted candidate in the constituency. In the general elections of 2011 she was reelected for the Senate.
Education[edit]
She studied law at the University of Valencia, graduated in 1970 and holds a Doctorate Cum Laude since 1973. She worked as a lecturer in commercial law and later she was Dean of the Law Faculty in the University of Valencia.
