Federica Mogherini
Federica Mogherini was born on June 16th 1973 in Rome. She is an Italian politician of Partito Democratico.
Political career[edit]
From 1988 to 1996, she was a member of the Italian Communist Youth Federation. In 1996 she joined the Youth Left after the dissolution of the Italian Communist Party and its transformation into a social-democratic party. In 2001 she joined the National Council of the Party Democratici di Sinistra. In 2003 she started working at the Democratici di Sinistra's Foreign Affairs Department and later she became the coordinator of the Department. During this time, she took care of matters relating to Iraq, Afghanistan and the peace process in Middle East.
She joined the Partito Democratico on November 4th 2007. In 2008 she was elected as a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the district of Veneto. She was the secretary of the Defense Committee, a member of the Italian delegation of the parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe and a member of the delegation at the parliamentary assembly at the Western European Union. On February 24th 2009 the new chairman of the Partito Democratico Dario Franceschini appointed her to his staff, with responsibility for Equal Opportunities. In the general election of 2013 she was elected for a second term in the Italian Chambres of Deputies for the district of Emilia Romagna.
Aditionally, she is a member of the Defense Committee and of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. Moreover, in April 2013, she became president of the Italian delegation at the Parliamentary Assembly of NATO.
On 9th December 2013, the new chairman of the PD Matteo Renzi appointed her as a member of his staff, with the responsibility of European Relations. On February 21st 2014 she also entered the Renzi Cabinet as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the third woman to hold the post after Susanna Agnelli and Emma Bonino.
Education[edit]
She has a Masters degree in political science from the University “la Sapienza” of Rome with a dissertation in political philosophy about the relationship between religion and politics in Islam, which she wrote during her Erasmus programme in Aix-en-Provence, France.
