Helle Thorning-Schmidt

Helle Thorning-Schmidt born 14 December 1966, is a Danish politician who has been the Prime Minister of Denmark since 3 October 2011, and the Leader of the Social Democrats since 12 April 2005. She is the first woman to hold either post. Thorning-Schmidt served as a Member of the European Parliament for Denmark from 1999 to 2004 before being elected to the Danish Parliament in 2005.

Political Career[edit]

She has been Prime Minister since October 3rd 2011 and was a Member of the European Parliament between 1999 and 2004. She was Chairperson of the Social Democratic Party from April 12th 2005. She worked as an International consultant for the Danish Trades Union Congress (LO) 1997-1999 and was Head of the Social Democratic Party's secretariat in the European Parliament 1994-1997.

Education[edit]

Helle Thorning-Schmidt has an MA in European studies from the European College 1992-1993 and an MSc in political science from the University of Copenhagen 1987-1994.
