Lord Harries of Pentregarth

Richard Harries was born on the 2nd June 1936. He is a retired bishop of the Church of England.

Political Career[edit]

In May 2006, it was announced that he would be made a life peer, receiving the title ‘Baron Harries of Pentregarth, of Ceinewydd in the County of Dyfed on 30th June 2006. During his time in the House of Lords, Harries was on the Procedure Committee from 2007-2010 and again from 2010-2012. He also served on the Privacy and Injunctions (Joint Committee) from 2011-2012. He currently serves on the Works of Art Committee, a position he has held since 2010.

Education[edit]

Harries was educated at Wellington College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He eventually moved on to read Theology at Selwyn College, Cambridge.

Notable Work[edit]

As Bishop of Oxford, he became a founder member of the Oxford Abrahamic Group, bringing together Christian, Muslim and Jewish scholars. He also chaired the Council of Christians and Jews from 1992 until 2001. In 1996 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. He has written over 26 books on the Christian Faith.
