Michael Ashcroft

Michael Anthony Ashcroft, Baron Ashcroft, Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, was born on 4th March 1946. He is an international businessman, philanthropist and politician. In October 2000 he was ennobled as a life peer, joining the House of Lords with the Conservative Party.

Political Career[edit]

From 1998 to 2001 he was Treasurer of the Conservative Party. Later in December 2005, he was appointed Deputy Chairman. In past years Ashcroft funded different parties in Belize and Australia.

Education[edit]

Ashcroft’s father was a British colonial civil servant, so he spent his childhood in Belize -former British Honduras- and Malawi. He studied at Norwich School, Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, and Mid-Essex Technical College, where he obtained a Higher National Diploma in Business studies.

Notable Work[edit]

Michael Ashcroft began his business activities opening companies in the Commonwealth country of Belize; nonetheless he has also other connections, having grown up there and later served as the country's ambassador to the United Nations, between 1998 and 2000. Lord Ashcroft has been Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University since November 2001; he is also the Founder and Chairman of Crimestoppers. Ashcroft has financially supported various environmental campaigns and groups, for example the Environmental Investigation Agency, who persuaded him to back a television campaign in six Caribbean countries, aimed at coaxing them to withdraw their support for whaling.
