Nichi Vendola
Nichi Vendola was born on the 26th of August 1958. He is an Italian left-wing politician, a former deputy of the Chamber of Deputies and president of region Puglia since 2005.
Political career[edit]
Since the age of 14, he was a member of the Italian Communist Youth Federation. He was a journalist for L’Unità, a left-wing newspaper. He became an activist and a leading member of the Italian gay organisation Arcigay. He was also a member of the National Secretariat of the Italian Communist Party. In 1992, Nichi Vendola was elected to the Chamber of Deputies and he remained there until 2005, then he resigned because he became President of the region Puglia. He was also a member of the Antimafia Commission and therefore he is a strong opponent of the Mafia and organised crime present in the economy and society. in 2005 he became president of the region Puglia. In 2009 he founded his party- Left Ecology Freedom.
