Nordpolitik is a term used to describe South Korea’s efforts to reach out to North Korea, officially beginning in 1988. It was an attempt to normalize relations between the two countries as well as to ease military tensions, which they hoped would in turn stabilize their relations with China and Russia. Nordpolitik takes its name from the German term Ostpolitik which describes the process of reunication between East and West Germany. Nordpolitik efforts did not have a great deal of success, and were followed by the Sunshine Policy initiative of the South Korean government, which had more in common with Ostpolitik actions.
