About Pirelli[edit]

Pirelli & C. SpA is a multinational company based in Milan, Italy, listed on the Milan Stock Exchange since 1922. Founded in 1872 by the engineer Giovanni Battista Pirelli, Pirelli is now the world’s fifth-largest tyre manufacturer behind Bridgestone, Michelin, Continental and Goodyear. It is present in over 160 countries, has 21 manufacturing sites around the world and a network of around 10,000 distributors and retailers.


Engagement in Cultural Diplomacy[edit]

Pirelli is actively engaged in promoting its place in Italian culture. The organisation focuses on not only protecting its cultural network but also at establishing new forms of artistic expression and communication. Pirelli Pirelli & C. SpA actively promotes this form of expression through two different organisations; La Fondazione Pirelli and Pirelli HangarBicocca, the former focusing on Historical Archives, exhibits, seminars and other cultural events and the latter on the promotion of contemporary art.

Employment Policy[edit]

Pirelli has 37,979 employees. It firmly commits to the training and development of its employees with a job rotation system and a person-tutor in order to fully enable their potential. The majority of its employees are engaged in the Tyre manufacturing industry with 37,776, of which 7,217 are blue collar workers, 30,234 are white collar workers and 316 are executives. In other sectors Pirelli employs 213 workers. The majority of workers are employed in Europe and Russia with 15,674, 1152 in Nafta, 14,244 in Central and South America and 3598 in Asia Pacific.

Cultural Exchange Programs[edit]

Pirelli upholds an International Mobility Program bringing strategic value to Leadership Development within the company. Around half of the Pirelli management and senior management personnel have had a significant work experience in foreign countries, representing a significant act of cultural diplomacy and internationalisation of the company. On average, 250 personnel on various levels have engaged in a cultural sabbatical, exchanging know-how, professional skills and exploiting their managerial potential in a significantly different environment making Pirelli a truly International Company. In 2013, 240 workers were expatriated, 73% of those were non-executive employees, 15% of which were women, representing 17 nationalities in 32 different countries on all 5 continents.

International Internship Program[edit]

Internships at Pirelli are considered the main way of establishing a career at Pirelli. To young university students they offer the chance to develop their abilities through special training programmes and on-the-job development. Pirelli also offers the chance for students to work on their University Thesis on the job to help develop the company’s goals as well as the students’ personal ones. Internship opportunities are available in 12 countries with Industrial Plants including: United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Romania, Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Egypt and China and in Commercial Branches in 160 Countries.

Cooperation with Universities[edit]

Pirelli and Qufu Normal University have an important and mutual cooperation whereby the Pirelli Organisation supports and funds 25 less well-off students to complete their studies in the sum of RMB 100,000. A second project aims to support the university in the development of their China Confucius Website and the Confucius Culture Month with a donation of RMB 60,000.

Promoting Human and Civil Rights[edit]

Pirelli is the only tyre manufacturer that is counted among the United Nations Global Impact top 100 companies on the global index. This encompasses the commitment by Pirelli to tackle issues related to sustainability and income level. The inclusion in this ranking recognises the role of the company in the UN’s ten universal principles in the areas of human rights, work and environment in view of responsible globalisation.

Activities in the Field of Humanitarian Aid[edit]

Pirelli works with a number of associations in the field of Humanitarian Aid including the Milan Institute for the Blind (Milan Istituto dei Ciechi), a company with which it has collaborated since 2005, exhibiting excellent results in terms of results from schools and the public. Pirelli is one of the founding members of Emergency, an NGO based in Italy, created to provide medical care to disaster, poverty and war victims. Children in Crisis, Insieme per la Pace and Centro ausiliario per i problemi minorali are also recipients of support from Pirelli.

Supporting Music and Visual Arts[edit]

Pirelli founded and actively supports the La Fondazione HangarBicocca. Hangar Bicocca is an exhibition hall dedicated to the production, exhibition and promotion of modern art. This programme works with the most important international artists, researching and experimenting with particular emphasis on unique characteristics of artistic expression. Pirelli has been creating an annual calendar every year since 1964. It is in limited print and only available to VIP’s and important Pirelli customers.

Supporting Sports[edit]

Pirelli has provided the tyres for FIM World Superbike Championship since 2007, and is the sole tyre provider for Formula One.
