Ray Collins

Ray Edward Harry Collins, Baron Collins of Highbury (born December 21st , 1954) is a British life peer and trade unionist who was appointed General Secretary of the Labour Party on 12 June 2008.

Political Career[edit]

Baron Collins has been a peer since 2011. He is currently the Shadow Spokesperson for International Development and was Shadow Spokesperson for Work and Pensions between 2012 and 2013, before assuming his current role. He is also an Opposition Whip in the Lords and has been since 2011.

He was General Secretary for the Labour Party between 2008 and 2011, and has also played a role in the party as a member of the National Policy Forum between 1997 and 2003 and a member of the National Constitutional Committee between 2001 and 2008.

Notable Work[edit]

Baron Collins worked as Central National Officer for the Transport and General Workers Union between 1984 and 1999, and went on to work as Assistant General Secretary of Unite the Union (Transport and Genral Workers Union) between 1999 and 2008. In December 2007, he was named the 27th most influential LGBT person in British politics by Pink News.
