Rudolf Chmel is a Slovak politician, who was the minister of culture from 2002 to 2005 and again in 2006. He is also a writer and editor. He was born on the 11th of February in 1939. He stood for a seat in the National council of Slovak Republic for MOST-Híd.

Political career[edit]

At present he is member of the Klub MOST-HÍD and president of the Committee on Human Rights and Minorities. From June 1990 until 1992 he served as the last Czechoslovak ambassador in Hungary. After his return, he went back to the Slovak Academy of Science. Since 2009 he has been the vice-president of Most–Híd. In 2009 he was one of those who got the Award for Good Neighbourhood and Understanding.

Education[edit]

He graduated in 1961 from Slovak literature and language at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava. He received the academic title DrSc. in 1992 and became an Associate Professor in 1993.

Notable work[edit]

Between 1993-2000 he was the president of the Open Society Foundation in Bratislava. He taught at Charles University in Prague and at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University in Bratislava. From 1961 he worked for the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, in 1964, he moved to the World Literature and Languages Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Between 1972-1982 he was an editor of the journal Slovenská literatúra (Slovak Literature).
